- Abstract
- Art-based research is becoming more and more widespread in the North American artistic field. However, in Europe, it is less well known. First, we explore the origins and institutional evolution of art-based research. Next, we describe the creative processes of pioneering artists who have improved theatrical practice. Then, we highlight the relations between art and politics, and between art and science. Finaly, we analyze the creative processes of various artists operating within the Belgian art scene in light of art-based research concept. This research aims to understand the role that this methodology plays – or could play – in theatrical practice at a time when art and theater need to reclaim their legitimacy, in the post-truth era. The research suggests that art-based research is present the theatrical field, although it should be more explicitly defined in order to address the challenges of today’s society.
