Abstract

enThis work explores the different ways in which monstrosity is used in the short stories of Ecuadorian authors María Fernanda Ampuero and Mónica Ojeda with the goal of criticizing capitalism and colonialism. The master’s thesis focuses itself on aesthetic monstrosity, in its links with the spiritual and with emotions. Thanks to nine short stories that come from Sacrificios humanos (2021), Las voladoras (2020) and Pelea de gallos (2018), it was possible to identify different elements that stand out in contemporary neogothic literature. The first one is the recurrency of the witch figure, in both victims of violence and powerful women. Then, attempts to make marginalized identities visible were observed, with monstruous victims and persecutors. Finally, we can see an important appeal to some character’s animality, which makes them impossible to exploit or appropriate by men who represent the ruling classes in capitalistic societies.
