Abstract

enThis master’s thesis consists of a systematic study of the indirect interrogative clauses’ syntax in Herodotus’ "Histories", by analyzing separately the introductory terms, interrogative and relative adverbs as well as pronouns. Although they belong to the same system, our findings suggest that adverbs and pronouns develop at different rates: whereas relative adverbs have become widely integrated into the system of subordinating items with interrogative value, the relative pronoun ὅς has only partially undergone such development. Nevertheless, this master’s thesis emphasizes that the relative forms and the direct and indirect interrogative ones constitute a relatively coherent and organized framework. The second part of this study investigates the proleptic structure and the thematization of constituents by prepositional phrases. These phenomena play a major role in organizing the Herodotus’ work and in spotting the theme of the clauses in which they appear.
