Abstract

enThe aim of this thesis is to provide a critical edition, a French translation, and a proposed commentary on the first book of Laurent Le Brun’s Nova Gallia Delphino. First published in 1639 in Paris, the collection comprises fourteen Neo-Latin elegies divided into two books, the first of which is directly dedicated to the newborn Dauphin, while the second is addressed to other powerful French figures. The poems focus on New France and the lives of the Indigenous communities that inhabit it. They are part of the promotion of both the Canadian missions carried out by the Society of Jesus in the 17th century and the French monarchy’s colonial project during the same period. Since the work has not yet been published in a modern edition or translation, our philological work aims, on the one hand, to fill this gap by providing researchers with material ready for study. Furthermore, the literary analysis we propose seeks to highlight the significance of this work—in relation to the historical context in which it was produced—for the study of Jesuit rhetoric in the service of the causes of the monarchy and the Canadian mission in the 17th century.
