- Free-space optical communications represent a promising technology for satellite-to-ground links. Their deployment, however, is strongly limited by atmospheric turbulence, which degrades the quality of optical beam propagation. This work presents a statistical study of turbulence profiles and, on this basis, proposes a method for reconstructing synthetic profiles. The latter is integrated into a phase-screen propagation simulation chain. To assess their practical relevance, these reconstructed profiles are used to test the reliability of realistic communication scenarios. The performance of the optical link is then evaluated and compared between measured and reconstructed profiles. The aim is to examine to what extent simplified yet consistent profiles can realistically represent the impact of turbulence on a satellite-to-ground downlink.
