- Abstract
This thesis is devoted to the historical and architectural study of the former parish church of Saint-Mengold in Huy, from its foundation to its transformation into a cultural center at the end of the 20st century. The approach adopted combines the analysis of written sources with a systematic archaeological examination of the building's masonry, framework, and decorations. The central issue of the work aims to clarify and correct the chronological attributions made in previous contributions, as well as to provide new ones in order to establish a chronological sequence of the major construction campaigns of the building over the centuries. The thesis is structured around the hagiography of Saint Mengold, the history of his cult, a synthesis of the data acquired on the architectural evolution of the building, and, finally, an archaeological study of the building's structural and finishing work. A significant advance in this work lies in the rediscovery of the foundation plan of the early church. In addition, the roof structures, interior elevations, and stucco and painted decorations, often neglected by research, have been thoroughly examined here. The results obtained have renewed our understanding not only of the material history of Saint-Mengold, but also of the dynamics of how a religious building adapts to liturgical, aesthetic, and urban changes.
