The leading exchange in Athens around 300 BCE, the classified section in the newspapers in 1750, and the credit card invention in 1950, are all multisided platforms. A multisided platform is a business that operates in a physical or virtual place that incentivizes two or more groups of customers to engage in a mutually beneficial interaction. (Evans & Schmalensee, 2016). Nowadays, information technology is giving a new impulse to multisided platforms and allowed firms such as Facebook, Uber, and Airbnb to emerge. This new type of multisided platforms is called “turbocharged multisided platform.” These new platforms are not only present around the world, but they are becoming global faster than traditional businesses. While conventional models such as the Uppsala model” explains an internationalization based on gradual involvement in the foreign market, These firms follow a “born-global” model that challenges the previous one. A substantial number of new companies, especially in high technology industries, multisided or not, have shown the ability to internationalize faster and often from or near inception. Knight and Cavusgil (2004) defined the born-globals as entrepreneurial firms that, from or near establishment, seek to derive a considerable percentage of their revenue from the sale of products in foreign markets. The ultimate purpose of this thesis is to compare the early internationalization process of a turbocharged multisided platform and a traditional SME. To do so, we developed a theoretical framework that we challenged with two qualitative case studies. First, Port Cities, a highly technological SME and its internationalization process from Indonesia to Malaysia. Second, Listminut, a Belgian turbocharged multisided platform and its internationalization to France. We challenged both important concepts to understand their business model and type of internationalization process. Eventually, we shared our recommendations for these cases and proposed suggestions for further studies on the topic.multisided platformsborn-globalinternationalization processesmultisided platformAre turbocharged multisided platforms more likely to become born-global compared to traditional SMEs?
