With this classic status have come many different adaptations, in different mediums. Until recently, there were no graphic novel adaptations. However, six were published in 2021. The present study analyses how three of these adaptations recreate and enhance the atmosphere of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four. The first chapter of this dissertation overviews the novel's reception throughout the years. The following chapters explore the reasons behind the choice of the corpus: Coste’s, Pontarolo’s and Derrien and Torregrossa’s adaptations and the framework needed to analyse adaptations of literary classics. The fourth chapter tackles the atmosphere of "Nineteen Eighty-four" and through what techniques it is created. The last three chapters analyse the adaptations through the lenses of architecture, colour theory, and intertextuality to highlight how these elements utilised in graphic novels enhance the original atmosphere of the novel.AdaptationsLiteratureOrwellColoursArchitectureDystopiaGraphic novelDrawing "Nineteen Eighty-four"'s stifling atmosphere : How some graphic novels adaptations recreate and enhance the atmosphere of "Nineteen Eighty-four" by George Orwelltext::thesis::master thesisthesis:43080
