The incumbent Pierre Nkurunziza had been ruling the coutry since 2006 and the question in the minds of many Burundi was whether or not he will run a third term. The agreement signed at Arusha in 2000 in the minds of many Burundians did not allow him to run a third term presidentail mandate. Great was the suprise of many Burundians and the oppositions when during the month of April 2015 the incumbent announced that he will be candidate during the upcoming presidential elections in total violation of the Arusha agreements. Accoridng to his supportes, he was elected once duirng the 2010 preseidential elections and had the right to run a third term in accordance with aricle 96 of the constitution. This inevitably led to a series of public protest in the street of Bujumbura few hours after his candidacy. There follows confrontation between the police and police in the capital city of the country some leading to the death of some civilans. The political unrest continued in the country and reached its apex with the occurrence of a coup d'état during the month of may led by major General Godefroid Niyombare. They benefited of the President absence in the country who was taking part in a summit in Dar es Salam (Tanzania) to organised a coup against the incumbent. The coup d'état ended up being a failure and the main protagonist fled the country. The inucmbent after this reinforced his security and held the elections despite regional and international pressure from major powers in the world.Third termArusha agreementsProtestconstitutionviolencediscourse analysisNewspaperAnalyse du discours de la presse internationale autour de la crise Burundaisetext::thesis::master thesisthesis:14558
