Abstract

enThrough the analysis of Georges Rodenbach’s Le Carillonneur, Camille Lemonnier’s La Chanson du carillon and Dominique Rolin’s Bruges la vive, this thesis attempts to identify the construction of the motif of the belfry in french-speaking Belgian literature as an imaginary, according to the definition of Jean-Jacques Wunenburger. The recognition of the imaginary of the belfry allows us to understand a complex mechanism for producing meaning from a monument characteristic of Belgian culture. The symbolic heritage developed around the belfry is taken from one author to another while being adapted to specific issues for each. Analyzing the construction of this imaginary allows us not only to grasp the richness of the literary motif of the belfry, but also to better understand the conception that different authors have of Belgian literature and its stakes.
