- Abstract
- William C. Stafford wrote his history of music in 1830, in the context of imperialist England. The analysis of representations of non-European music, which constitutes the first part of his work, opens the doors to a particular historical perception, which is the subject of this study. The author's research into bibliographical references is the central element of this text, and the starting point for wide-ranging questions concerning the heterogeneity of his sources, the structure of his narrative, and his transcription of information. These various elements have highlighted certain inconsistencies, which have a major implication in understanding Stafford's methodology and way of thinking, leading to a second questioning of the historiographical conception of this work. This project therefore seeks to understand the issues underlying such a conception, and its impact on the representation of non-European music.
