Abstract
Although often neglected in scientific studies, the glass heritage of the 17th century, and more specifically stained glass, is now being given a place in this thesis. Here, monumental works of the 17th century glass production in the Old Netherlands will be observed, analysed and studied, which are interesting because of their richly decorated architectural arrangement. These are the windows of the Chapel of Our Lady Liberator in Brussels Cathedral and the cloister of the Parc Abbey in Heverlee. This thesis proposes a systematic formal approach to the ornamentation of the stained glass windows, a methodical inventory of the decorative motifs comparing the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a study of the architectural and ornamental syntax. The second part of this thesis tends to open up the field of research by confronting stained glass with other media with which it shares formal analogies, such as altarpieces, frontispieces and ephemeral festivities.
