Abstract
Sawtooth Wave Adiabatic Passage (SWAP) cooling is a promising laser-cooling technique for narrow optical transitions. This thesis investigates its application to calcium atoms on the ultra-narrow intercombination line and develops the experimental tools needed for its implementation. Theoretical analysis shows that SWAP cooling is feasible within accessible parameters, while the experimental work establishes a stable laser-locking scheme, characterizes the imaging system, and improves MOT stability through residual amplitude modulation compensation. Together, these results provide the groundwork for a first SWAP-cooling experiment in calcium.
