Abstract

enThe Chain on the Gospel according to Luke by Nicetas of Heraclea is a compilation of patristic excerpts intended to explain and interpret the Gospel according to Luke. Produced within the 11th-century Constantinopolitan biblical scholarship milieu, this collection brings together some 3,310 cited passages (‘scholia’) from around seventy identified authors. Despite its significance, this chain has never been published in a critical edition. The present work first offers (I) an introduction aimed at situating the author and his works, setting out the general principles of exegetical chains, and describing Nicetas’ Chain on Luke. The core of the work is (II) the critical edition of the first 35 scholia, covering Luke 1:1–10: this is accompanied by descriptions of the collated manuscripts, a stemma codicum, notes on the textual tradition, and a French translation which, like the Greek text, is unpublished. The final part (III) aims to compare the scholia written by Nicetas with the original works from which they were drawn. This comparison will highlight the methods of reworking employed by Nicetas in order to incorporate the source text into his compilation. A few concluding remarks will summarise the observations made, highlight the limitations encountered, and emphasise the importance of studying the Chain on Luke, as well as other exegetical chains, in order to contribute to a broader and more comprehensive understanding of biblical exegesis.
