Abstract
enThis dissertation presents a comparative study of three 19th-century novels: Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, L’Illusione by Federico De Roberto and The Doctor’s Wife by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Drawing on the cinematic concepts of the male gaze and the female gaze, this work examines the interplay of male and female perspectives in the portrayal of the adulterous woman. Firstly, the analysis demonstrates that the male gaze functions as a narrative mechanism of domination through the objectification of the female body, the moral judgement passed on the heroine, and the dismissal of her desire. Secondly, the study highlights the cracks in the male gaze and the emergence of a female gaze, through access to the female consciousness of the heroines as they express their inner experiences.
