Abstract
enThis thesis analyses the mechanisms of change in the fertility of adolescent girls and young women aged 15-24 in the democratic Republic of Congo between 2013 and 2024 using data from demographic and health surveys. The total fertility rate decreased from 6.57 in 2013 to 5.47 in 2024, while the contribution of adolescent girls and young women declined during this period, from 31.43% in 2013 to 29.91% in 2024. To understand the mechanisms of change, we conducted a multivariate decomposition analysis. A multivariate decomposition analysis was performed to understand the mechanisms through which the change operates. The Findings reveal that the observed change in the reproductive behaviour is mostly attributed to the decline in adolescent and young women’s fertility between 2013-2024. These results suggest strengthening measures that promote girls’ education up to and beyond secondary school, delaying the age of marriage and implementing actions for inclusive sexual as well as reproductive health for adolescent and young women.
