Abstract
enThis study examines the challenges involved in translating "The Sea Road" by Margaret Elphinstone, a contemporary historical novel inspired by the Icelandic Vinland sagas. The dissertation seeks to answer the following central question: how can the medieval world of the text, already filtered through the English language, be recreated in French without losing the author’s contemporary voice? Drawing on the theories of Antoine Berman and Paul Ricœur, the translation strategy prioritises respect for otherness and rejects domestication. By adopting an approach that privileges welcoming the foreign into the target language, the translation aligns itself with a conception of “linguistic hospitality”. It thus becomes a space where languages and cultures meet without their differences being entirely erased.
