Abstract
This study examines the extent to which sexism is present in people’s perception and actual linguistic representation of gender in news articles from China and the United States (US). Survey results from both countries reveal that male-skewed terms are mostly negative and uncontrollable, yet female-skewed terms are primarily desirable and controllable. Comparing perception to the actual linguistic gender representation, people’s stereotype toward genders is more entrenched, but the actual language use is more neutral from both countries. Chinese and American wording of journalists also differ to a large extent, with the American press using more sensational words.
