- This study aims to determine whether SH develops similarly in rugby players and endurance athletes in relation to the level of practice, if contact sports are associated with specific adaptations modulating central sensitization (e.g., exposure to repeated nociceptive stimuli) that are not related to adaptations specifically induced by physical training. 84 participants allocated in 2 groups were recruited for this study: A rugby group composed of 24 females rugby players allocated in 2 groups (12 amateurs players and 12 athletes) and an endurance group composed of 60 subjects of both sexes allocated in 3 groups (20 athletes, 20 intermediate and 20 sedentary subjects). A high frequency stimulation (HFS) protocol was executed on one of the volar forearms in order to induce central sensitization (CS), which was assessed through secondary hyperalgesia (SH). Mechanical pinprick sensitivity (MPS) and secondary hyperalgesia area (SHA) were assessed 10, 20, 30 and 50 minutes post-HFS in endurance group and 25, 30 and 35 minutes post-HFS in rugby group. In both groups, MPS was also assessed before HFS and on both forearms for each timepoint. Rugby players exhibited a smaller SHA than endurance athletes, and elite athletes—regardless of sport—showed a reduced SHA compared to intermediates. MPS increased in all participants after HFS, with no significant group differences.
