Abstract
enAncient Athens sought to establish its hegemony in the eastern Mediterranean through several forms of settlements, including cleruchies. This new form, which emerged at the end of the 6th century B.C., differed from earlier colonies in the Greek World, as attested by ancient authors and inscriptions. Drawing on these sources, this thesis aims to examine various aspects of cleruchies concerning the historical context of their establishment, their internal organisation, the status of the cleruchs, their numbers, the fate of the local inhabitants, the cleruchs' relationship with Athens and, finally, depending of the cases, the historical context of their disappearance. To this end, 26 have been selected and analysed to establish a consensus definition of the cleruchy, based on their attestations in the sources.
