- Abstract
As its name suggests, this study investigates the vocabulary proficiency in Dutch and French of French-speaking (non-)CLIL learners in the final year of secondary education in the Walloon municipalities with facilities. The central question of the research is: "Is there a difference in the level of vocabulary in Dutch and French between 6th grade secondary school students enrolled in CLIL and in the traditional programme among schools located in the municipalities with facilities of Wallonia? Based on the results of a sociological survey, on a DIALANG placement test and language test, the vocabulary proficiency in Dutch and French of the two populations is compared. The aim of this contribution is threefold: a) to give an overview of the vocabulary proficiency in Dutch and French of the two populations; b) to examine to what extent attending school in a municipality with facilities has an impact on the vocabulary proficiency in Dutch of the (non-)CLIL pupils; c) to analyse whether reading in the target language outside school hours has an impact on the Dutch vocabulary proficiency of the (non-)CLIL pupils. From the analysis of the answers to the sociological survey, it became clear that the profiles of the CLIL and non-CLIL pupils differ considerably. The study also showed that CLIL pupils have a better command of Dutch vocabulary compared to non-CLIL pupils. In terms of French vocabulary mastery, the DIALANG results of both groups were similar. Furthermore, the geographical location of the schools in a Walloon municipality does not have a significant influence on the pupils' Dutch vocabulary proficiency. Finally, reading in the target language outside the school context also has no significant impact on the participants’ Dutch vocabulary proficiency.
