Abstract

enThis thesis presents an analysis of how the left is portrayed in the discourses delivered by the Rassemblement National (RN) and VOX during the 9th term of the European Parliament, with the aim of understanding to what extent the denigration of the left is part of their strategy to improve their public image. After providing context on the positions of VOX and the RN, as well as the specific characteristics of parliamentary discourse, the study is divided into two parts. First, it examines lexical variation in references to the left, comparing differences among various MEPs. Second, it focuses on the discursive construction of the left in the speeches of both parties, from a quantitative perspective using the SketchEngine tool, and a qualitative perspective based on Appraisal Theory. The comparison of the results obtained from both corpora reveals discursive and ideological similarities that shed light on the global nature of the European far-right’s rhetorical strategy, in which criticism of the left serves to legitimize its own discourse.
