Abstract
Long-term use of benzodiazepine and z-drug (BZRA) is popular among older adults for treating insomnia (and anxiety). However, the use of BZRA is recommended only for the short term due to their multiple adverse effects. Medication deprescribing is a good potential option for long-time users of BZRA and can help them to discontinue the medication. The main aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the efficacy of different deprescription methods of BZRA in older adults (≥ 65 years). The research databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, Tripdatabase, NICE, KCE) were searched and nine papers met the inclusion criteria, including five literature reviews, two meta-analyses, and two guidelines published ≥ 2010. The results show different effective deprescription methods in older adults with varying degrees of success; including tapering, tapering with education, tapering with psychological intervention (e.g., CBT), and tapering with pharmacological substitutions. Additionally, one of the most cost- and time-effective BZD deprescription methods shared among the reviewed studies was tapering with education. The study results and limitations are discussed in light of the existing literature. Finally, some practical suggestions for educational interventions are provided.
