- Phthalates are widespread endocrine disruptors whose metabolites, particularly MEHP, are detected in most women. The aim of this work is to review and integrate current evidence on the mechanisms through which phthalates impair ovarian function and female fertility. These compounds profoundly impair ovarian function by disrupting folliculogenesis, steroidogenesis and key cellular signalling pathways. This leads to increased apoptosis, depletion of the ovarian reserve and reduced ovocyte quality. Human and animal studies reveal clinical consequences including anovulation, irregular cycles, accelerated ovarian ageing and a higher risk of premature ovarian insufficiency. Biomonitoring studies confirm global exposure, influenced by age, socioeconomic status and environmental factors. European regulatory measures restricting phthalate use highlight the need to reduce exposure in order to safeguard female reproductive health.
