- Abstract
- This thesis is based on the typologies and functions of furniture in the representations of the Marquise de Pompadour. Indeed, this work aims to highlight the potential links between the character itself and the furniture surrounding her. Coming from the petty bourgeoisie, Madame de Pompadour is a particularly interesting case since she is a famous figure who was not predestined to occupy the position of official mistress of the king. She used tricks to maintain her social status and surround herself with wealth. She also used furniture to communicate her status, intelligence and personality. The marquise was often found in luxurious rooms with libraries. In Europe, the 18th century was a revolutionary period for furniture. Today, La Pompadour is still recognised as having left her mark on French history and she still inspires modern women.
