- Abstract
- During the Archaic period, the Eastern Mediterranean was at the heart of the peregrinations of traders of diverse origins. From these multiple currents that crossed and clashed, a particular production of alabasters decorated with a female bust was born. Although there are only about fifty examples, made of alabaster or clay, they are found in very different regions: Cyprus, Rhodes, Naucratis, Etruria and even Gordion. The study of the context in which they were found and their iconographic characteristics will highlight the heterogeneous nature of this production, which adopts motifs from Syria, Phoenicia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, etc. While this type is rarely studied, this dissertation will attempt to bring together the various examples known to date in a catalogue and to put forward hypotheses on their origins and manufacture in a context where different mentalities are mixed and, sometimes, confused.
