Abstract

enThis master's thesis focuses on the Liber quartus of the Poemata by Manuel Pimenta (1542-1603), a Portuguese Jesuit born in Santarém, who taught classical humanities in the colleges of the Society of Jesus and also served as prefect there, notably in Coimbra, Évora, and Lisbon. Published posthumously in Coimbra in 1622 by the university printer Didier Gomes de Loureiro, the first volume of the Poemata brings together twelve books of Latin religious poetry, of which our study examines the fourth. This book displays both formal and thematic coherence. As its subtitle indicates, De Christo nato. In varias Christi et Virginis tabellas, it is devoted entirely to the poetic description of effigies and paintings depicting the infant Jesus, the Virgin, and, more occasionally, Saint John the Baptist. It consists of seventy-five epigrams in elegiac couplets, which can be linked to twenty-two distinct effigies or paintings. Our thesis pursues three complementary objectives, corresponding to the three constitutive stages of the critical edition of a Jesuit Neo-Latin text: establishing the text, translating it, and analysing its poetics. By combining these three objectives, our thesis thus seeks to provide the tools needed to better understand the place of ekphrasis in Jesuit poetics and the way in which Manuel Pimenta transforms his poems into a genuine experience of spiritual meditation.
