Abstract

enThis final-year project explores the concept of place from a philosophical perspective. The overall aim is to develop a philosophy of places drawing on interdisciplinary sources, with a view to proposing a conceptual and practical framework for addressing the climate crisis. Specifically, the project will examine how our relationship with place could serve as a powerful catalyst for action, enabling our societies to adapt to the demands posed by the climate crisis. Having considered what a philosophy of place might entail, this work will focus on two main areas. The first involves describing the mechanisms underlying the relationship between humans and place. The aim is to understand how and why we alter the places we inhabit. In turn, we will also examine how places influence the ways in which we organise society. Through this lens, we will understand why we have reached points of rupture between the development of our societies and the geophysical constraints of our environment. We will draw on the discipline of spatial planning and the capitalist socio-economic context in which it has developed, to analyse how place has been appropriated by the system. The second theme concerns the proposal, resistance and reappropriation of places. Through this theme, we aim to show how individuals, groups and society can reclaim places, restoring their meaning and organic character. Through this lens, we will draw on the work of grassroots actors, community experience, social movements and ethics. In short, we will demonstrate why the (re)appropriation of places is a crucial step towards taking effective action in the fight against climate change, both at a local and global level.
