- Context Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Oral therapies offer convenience but raise adherence issues, partly due to limited patients’ understanding. Pharmacists could play a key role in improving patients’ knowledge and daily medication management through individualized patient therapeutic education (PTE). Objectives The primary objective is to evaluate the impact of a pharmacy-led PTE session on patients’ knowledge of their oral anticancer therapy (OAT). Secondary objectives include assessing changes in adherence, identifying undocumented medication and pharmaceutical interventions, and measuring patients’ satisfaction. Methodology Interventional pilot study conducted in CH EpiCURA (Hornu), over a 10-week period. Patients attended 2 in-person meetings (initial interview and PTE session) and one follow-up call at day 30. Knowledge was evaluated before (educational diagnosis), immediately after and 30 days post-PTE using predefined criteria. Adherence was measured using the ASK-12 questionnaire at baseline and day 30. A satisfaction survey was completed post-session. The 45-minute PTE session included personalized explanations about cancer and treatment, medication overview, a “Problem-Solution” card game on side effects, and role-playing exercises. Results 15 patients were included. A 32% increase in patients’ knowledge was observed post-session, with retention maintained at day 30 (4% decrease). ASK-12 scores improved, indicating better adherence (mean score from 17.22 to 16.22; n=9). Medication reconciliation identified 30 undocumented drugs and 6 pharmaceutical interventions, two of which had a high clinical impact (CLEO model). Satisfaction was high: 85.7% (n=12) of patients were very satisfied, and 14.3% (n=2) satisfied. Conclusion This pilot study suggests that PTE focused on oral anticancer therapies improves BC patients’ knowledge. The observed improvement, along with adherence support and high patient satisfaction, further underscores the important role of clinical pharmacists in the management of breast cancer therapy.
