Abstract
Depression is a common pathology nowadays and the renewed interest in the natural world is leading to the search for alternative treatments such as phytotherapy. Saffron is then proposed in the form of several formulations promising emotional balance, good morale, better sleep, ... However, there is little tangible evidence of these effects which remain rather suppositions. The aim of this thesis is therefore to analyze different comparative studies of saffron with other antidepressant treatments in order to determine whether the efficacy, safety and quality of the available formulations are sufficient for their use. Does saffron have all the promising properties attributed to it, particularly in the treatment of depression ? Does it have an advantage over other treatments available on the market ? Are the available formulations as safe and effective as promised ? We will see, through this paper, that saffron has many mechanisms of action and that it seems almost as effective as other antidepressants. However, the studies that bring these different proofs require a certain amount of mistrust. Moreover, data concerning the quality and safety of saffron-based specialties are very little in the literature and relatively confused.
