Abstract
The study examines the effects of environmental pollution on the health and well-being of households in downtown Ngiri-Ngiri, in the capital Kinshasa, DRC. Applying Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model, Sen's capacity approach, and environmental justice principles, the research established a quantitative plan based on data from 120 households. After implementing descriptive, bivariate and multivariate statistical methods via Stata, the results indicate that a large majority of households suffer from a high level of pollution in their neighbourhood. This is strongly linked to the characteristics of the household, housing conditions and access to adequate sanitation facilities. The study also highlights the multidimensional consequences of pollution: according to research, it can affect physical health and household economic conditions, as well as accentuate social inequalities. Finally, the study makes some recommendations such as strengthening health policies, improving environmental management practices and increasing public awareness of environmental risks.
