Abstract
This thesis tries to determine --- with two two-stage Cournot models --- how external shocks impact the decision of integration as well as what could be the main advantages to do so. I develop three cases that establish either the impact of market size (upstream and downstream) and the effect of waves of integration in an industry. Furthermore, I discuss integration with external suppliers/manufacturers.
