Abstract
This paper investigates the effect of school choice on segregation. Predictions about segregation from theoretical sociology models match the results of school choice in Amsterdam, which finds that preference heterogeneity accounts for a large percentage of segregation. This paper addresses the need for a social welfare function to account for segregation as a negative externality.
