- Abstract
- There has been a steady decline of students wanting to learn Dutch as a first foreign language. Because of this, studies have been conducted on the role of motivation, the importance of sharing the Flemish culture, and contacts between language communities as key elements to learning a foreign language (Mettewie, 2018). L. Mettewie, a professor at the University of Namur, has directed many studies on language acquisition and its impact on relationships between language communities in Belgium. Following these key factors, we will look at teachers' point of views and their feelings around students who are not motivated to learn Dutch, one of the national languages of their country, compared to their motivation to learn English. The aim of this dissertation was to make a comparative analysis of the difficulties encountered by English and Dutch teachers with French-speaking students in the Walloon-Brussels Federation. Within the framework of this thesis, ten language teachers teaching in different schools in the Walloon-Brussels Federation participated in interviews around the difficulties encountered when learning foreign languages (Dutch/English). These interviews were then analyzed in comparison with previous studies on the subject.
