- Abstract
- Althought Hephaetus is the divine blacksmith ans the master of fire in the greek pantheon, he is a lame monster who has not always fit in among the Olympians. Crippled and rejected by his fellows, he was forced to undergo a long series of ordeals to become the universally recognised craftsman of greek mythology. Based on greek sources, this work seeks to show how the different experiences of the divine blacksmith constitute a coherent whole, as a magical initiation, and how his handicap is both the starting point of his learning and the common thread around wich it is structured. Throught his savoir-faire and intelligence, and thanks to the help of several divinities, Hephaestus is able to show his power and take an important place in the organisation of the cosmos, to the point where he can become the privileged enforcer of the supreme god, Zeus.
