Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to characterize the deposits produced by the Multi-Layer Friction Surfacing (MLFS) technique applied to the Al-7075 alloy. Since the interface between the deposit and the substrate is a particularly critical zone, this work focuses on its in-depth analysis with the aim of identifying possible avenues for improvement. The final objective is also to highlight the potential industrial applications of this method. This study was carried out in collaboration with the company SABCA. The MLFS process, also known as Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) or Friction Surfacing Additive Manufacturing (FSAM), is a relatively recent technology and only a few studies have been dedicated to it. Its application to high-strength alloys such as Al-7075 remains largely unexplored. In this thesis, its principles, advantages, and limitations are briefly presented and discussed. The work also includes the analysis of the forces applied during the process. Macroscopic and microscopic observations, as well as mechanical tests, were conducted in order to characterize the deposit–substrate interface and to evaluate the influence of the applied forces. The results obtained highlight significant variations in the grain structure and in the mechanical behavior depending on the applied force. The MLFS process thus confirms its potential to refine the microstructure of the material.
