Abstract

enThis thesis explores how differences in parental leave and childcare policies in Sweden, Norway and Denmark shape gendered outcomes in employment, caregiving, and pay. Using Diane Sainsbury’s gender regime theory and an intra-regime comparative design, it analyses how variations in institutional arrangements produce distinct outcomes for women. The findings show that although the chosen countries formally endorse the individual earner–carer model, their policies generate unequal outcomes. The thesis, therefore, attempts to demonstrate that earner-carer policies are insufficient to overcome deeply embedded gendered divisions of work and care.
