- Vortex ring state is a flight configuration that is encountered by helicopters when they meet the chaotic part of their wake. This happens at high rate of descent with low horizontal speed. This causes a loss in thrust and a loss in responsiveness of the controls of the aircraft. A coupled simulation of multi-body dynamics and aerodynamics is used to create a visualisation of vortex ring state and to analyze what happens to the rotor when this phenomena is encountered.
