Abstract

In this master’s dissertation, I conduct a cross-linguistic research on English and French translation strategies in the context of the European institutions. My research is based on the analysis of three specific translation strategies, namely transposition, modulation, and explicitation. I investigate how these strategies are used in the translation services of the European Union in terms of frequency and directionality by means of two different corpora, Europarl and the European Parliament Translation and Interpreting Corpus. I also address terminological issues by presenting three classical translation taxonomies: Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995), Newmark’s (1988), and Pym’s (2017).

Ce mémoire vise à mener une recherche interlinguistique sur les stratégies de traduction en anglais et en français dans le contexte des institutions européennes. Mes travaux sont basés sur l'analyse de trois stratégies de traduction, à savoir la transposition, la modulation et l'explicitation. J'étudie ici comment ces stratégies sont utilisées dans les services de traduction de l'Union européenne au moyen de deux corpus différents, Europarl et EPTIC (European Parliamant Translation and Interpreting Corpus). J'aborde également certaines questions terminologiques en présentant les typologies proposées par Vinay et Darbelnet (1995), Newmark (1988) et Pym (2017).
