Abstract
This study aims to present the cases of repudiation that were depicted in medieval manuscripts. We focus on instances from the kingdom of France from the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries and put them into perspective with older cases: biblical, mythological, ancient and imaginary. This research is structured around several main themes: a close examination of images in relation to their support, the analysis of gestures and colours, a reflection on the matrimonial question central to the relations between the Church and the Crown, and finally an exploration of questions of gender, power and alliance. The cases of separation featured in this thesis are: Hagar and Abraham, Medea and Jason, Messalina and Claudius, Guinevere and Arthur, Berthe of Holland and Philip I, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII, Ingeborg of Denmark and Philip II Augustus and Blanche of Burgundy and Charles IV.
