Abstract
Bore evacuators relying on check valves lose efficiency over time due to the inherent wear and tear of their moving parts. While these valves decouples jet duration from maximum reservoir pressure, allowing complex flow dynamics to be ignored for the design phase, preferable valveless designs do not permit this decoupling. This study aims at identifying governing parameters by comparing 0D/pseudo-1D models against steady-state 3D CFD, imposing 0D/pseudo 1-D results onto the 3D boundaries. Both agreed on macroscopic thermodynamics, but 3D CFD uniquely captures spatial physics like fluid turning into the port. It also highlighted the effect of gas velocity in the tube on the mass flow rate in the port. However, while 3D CFD is useful as a diagnostic tool to apprehend relevant phenomena, its utility as a design tool is limited by its dependence on idealized 0D/pseudo 1-D boundaries and mesh quality problem. Therefore, future development should prioritize empirical data and/or the inclusion of flow-turning effects to upgrade computationally inexpensive 0D/pseudo 1-D models, reserving 3D CFD for final evaluation.
