Abstract
Nowadays, church tapestries remain relatively unknown to researchers and the general public, even though for centuries they were an elementary decoration for Catholic solemnities. These tapestries became more and more important after the Council of Trent and throughout the 17th century, a period of renewed devotion, which was then displayed in splendid and spectacular Baroque ceremonies. In this thesis, thirteen tapestries are brought to light in a heterogeneous and singular corpus that allows a global study of a specific phenomenon, namely the functions and interpretations of tapestries in a liturgical context in the former Southern Netherlands. In addition to the need to reconstitute their uses, which are now completely forgotten and lost, examining the iconography of these artworks also reveals their diversity. Broadening the research that has so far only focused on choir hangings, this thesis proposes a more open typology and makes a synthesis based on the tapestries of which we still have a trace - which is unfortunately proving to be more and more exceptional.
