Abstract

enThe Emperor Hadrian in the light of the "Translatio studii". For the analysis of a historical figure at the crossroads of two literary traditions There is no doubt that ancient historiography has been relayed in medieval literature. On the other hand, that the characters who shaped it were represented with the same interest by the medieval scriptores remains to be proven in many respects. With a view to a better understanding of the disparity that affects the stories of these characters in the Middle Ages, we propose to conduct the investigation on a prince who occupies a relatively marginal place in medieval historiography: the Emperor Hadrian. To this end, we will be interested in the transmission of the main ancient source about the emperor, a collection of thirty imperial biographies entitled "Augustan History". Next, we will compare the representations of the Emperor Hadrian in Jean de Vignay’s "Miroir historial" and in Sébastien Mamerot’s "Romuleon", with those of the "Augustan History". These two works being the respective Medio-French translations of Vincent de Beauvais’ ("Speculum historiale") and Benvenuto da Imola’s (eponym) works in Latin, they are fully part of the diachronic and chronological process of translatio studii. We will therefore devote ourselves to this concept intrinsically linked to the transmission of the medieval text through epochs and we will finally try to reveal the methods of translation of the two medieval authors, in order to grasp the mode of reception of matter on Hadrian in their work.
