Abstract
This dissertation explores the fantastic beasts depicted on the astronomical ceilings of the temples of Dendera and Esna, dating from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The study aims to reveal the role and significance of these creatures in Egyptian cosmology. This research examines the abundant presence of these hybrid creatures and their function in the representation of the cosmos. The hypothesis put forward suggests that these fantastic creatures are not mere ornaments, but that they play an essential role in celestial symbolism, acting as guardians of sacred places and embodying divine forces crucial to maintaining the balance of the universe.
