Abstract

enThis research aims at highlighting the contemporary obstacles to translating the queer in France. This reflection, born from a collective observation, endeavors to understand the political, cultural, linguistic, and editorial context in which queer identities develop and evolve. Lately officially regarded, both at civic and legal levels, they still face a heteronormative, patriarchal, and binary cistem that limits their visibility. It is in this context, that shapes the reader’s imagination, that some queer translations eventually see the light of day. Through research seminar initiatives from French researchers in the 1990s, begin the translations of fundamental writings of the queer theory on an institutional level, beyond activists’ circles. However, the fields of translation and gender studies only meet around ten years later. They have a lot in common, especially when it comes to marginality and intrinsic binarity. In a post-binary approach, I investigated practices that could enable to translate the queer and queer the translation. Whether inspired by design or writing methods, they turn out to be tools towards empowerment: allowing to recover one’s free will on one side and making queer identities speakable and visible on the other. Along with the translator who uses them, they contribute to expanding the range of possibilities and stimulating social change. It should be stressed that social change can however only be the result of collective actions. First because translators are only one link in the literary chain, also supported by publishers and booksellers. Second because they are the instigators of a social network of many actors, as the promotion of books participate it feeding and enriching the queer thinking, thanks to roundtables, conferences, academic or activist research and actions.
