Abstract
THEME: Integration of care protocols in the chronic wounds care by nurses in rest and care homes. Context : The chronic wounds care has always been an important health pre-occupation for states and populations, despite the progress achieved and means used for this care. These wounds have an impact on the life quality especially on the elderly people, an increase of morbidity and mortality and the health related costs. In Belgium as everywhere else in the world, the issue is being noticed with expensive treatments and also of the patient’s prevention per day. The care for these chronic wounds requires the integration of many approaches and strategies in order to ensure optimal quality. In that manner, the use of treatment protocol is seen as a credible alternative. Our work’s objective is to analyze the existence and the use of care protocols by the nursing staff as an important element of the chronic wounds care in five rest and care houses of the CPAS of the Brussels commune; this in order to reinforce and make systematic their use in the chronic wounds care. Methods: We made a qualitative but exploratory study on the nurses working in those institutions. Tools and means used to collect data were done based on individual meetings which were semi-directed using the interview guides prepared for that purpose. The analysis of its content enabled us to pull out some precious data. Results: The analysis of the study results put into evidence a low knowledge of wounds care protocols or their modality or elaboration process by the nurses. We were also able to note that the nurses rarely make use of those care tools, which may explain their absence within the institutions that took part in the study. However, internal care processes were assimilated to protocols according to the understanding of the nurses interviewed. We were able to note that these processes were not observed either due to the lack of specific competencies in wounds care, either for simply human or relational reasons within the teams, or for a high workload reasons.
