Abstract
A large majority of the barriers on our car parks represent a danger for the so-called "vulnerable" road users. Indeed, when they pass below a barrier arm, the barrier may not detect them and therefore close violently on a vulnerable user. Such incidents have already taken place and can have serious consequences. To solve this problem, we can see regularly, in our car parks, the establishment of a simple signage prohibiting our pedestrians to circulate under the barrier. In addition, a passage is also added on the side so that users can travel safely. As part of this work, we worked with Automatic Systems to find and test a solution, at the lowest cost, to detect without contact, people passing under the barrier arm. We asked ourselves the following question: "how to protect vulnerable road users (cyclists, pedestrians) when closing the arm of automated barriers by integrating a smart sensor ? " In order to implement this solution, we first focused on new technologies on the market in order to refine our research to choose the most appropriate and robust model to design. Once the foundations of the model have been laid, we have installed the first prototype, set up the necessary electronics to be able to recover and analyze the data coming from the sensor. Subsequently, we conducted several tests in order to know if the sensor could detect a user. Through this project, we have made significant progress. Indeed, we were able to show that when this technology was associated with a "good" algorithm, it was able to detect people under the barrier arm in wet conditions. However, we can still, today, improve this technology by optimizing for example the sensitivity of the barrier. In the future, this type of technology could equip all Automatic Systems barriers. Indeed, once improved and industrialized, it will be easier to equip and upgrade all the barriers at A.S, even the one already in place, because it will only require to change the barrier arm and the barrier will meet the new standards. Finally, this technology will allow the vulnerable user and the barrier to "coexist" without the risk of serious incidents.
