- This master's thesis explores how artificial intelligence is transforming the industrial capabilities and competitiveness of healthcare biotech companies, focusing on bioproduction, particularly in Belgium. Through a three-part literature review (AI, biotechnology, bioproduction) and a qualitative survey of nine Belgian players in the sector (major biopharma groups, SMEs, clusters), this work analyzes current uses, deployment levers and obstacles to the adoption of AI in a regulated environment. The results show that, while AI is not yet widespread, it is already being used in key functions such as automated visual inspection, quality control, process optimization and predictive maintenance. In Belgium, adoption of AI is mixed: large biopharma groups have dedicated resources and strategies, while smaller structures are struggling to integrate these technologies, due to a lack of resources, hybrid profiles and regulatory clarity. A regulatory framework that tends to have an impact on the big players too. The conditions for success identified include data quality, structured information flows, internal governance and a coherent strategic vision. In this brief, we also highlight the importance of coordinated public support and a strong industrial vision to reinforce technological sovereignty at both Belgian and European levels. AI is not a miracle solution, but a strategic lever which, if deployed wisely, can help modernize biomanufacturing and maintain the competitiveness of the sector in Belgium in the long term.
