Abstract
The decrease of social and economic disparities within the EU is a necessary precondition for a single market that benefits everyone. The process toward convergence has been traditionally inspired by theories of growth which focus on stages, optimal spatial structures, and optimal levels of investment. This thesis approaches convergence from a different angle: the world - systems perspective, and it does so by analysing the case of Croatia. The world-systems perspective contributes to the debate over convergence by putting the accent on the necessity of being aware of the coherent structures and cumulated effects persisting over time.
