- Abstract
- One emerging question of the end of the 20th century for ethics is the question of the moral status of non-human animals. This question is very important for anglo-american philosophy. In this text, we will discuss the evolution of the discussion around animal ethics in this anglo-american context. In particular, we will discuss the answers to the questions linked to animal ethics proposed by utilitarian thinkers, contractarian thinkers and thinkers of the rights view. Our goal will be to show that there is no consensus about the questions related to animal ethics in anglo-american philosophy, and notably to show that contractarianism cannot be used to ground welfarism and abolitionism.
